Side Effects & Consequences
This page is a mixture of pieces that demonstrate the inspiring nature of writing. They (by and large) came out of nowhere whilst working on other, sometimes longer-term, projects and have little in common* with each other.
Feel free to have a browse and to contact me if you want to ask about any of them.
Thanks
*If so, this is coincidence. Or something to do with the ‘magic’ of the imagination/sub-conscious that I fail to (or rather prefer not to) understand.

I entered a 1,000 word (48 hour) fiction writing competion. My Prompts were:
Genre: Fairy Tale
Location: A Lookout*
Item: A Brick
This story grabbed my imagination and I thought it worth exploring. In the end I decided it didn’t quite meet the brief (more ‘childrens story’ than ‘fairy tale’), so I didn’t submit it - instead submitting an alternative that more closely seemed to fit the forumula/genre of a fairy tale. I enjoyed writing it and was suprised by how quickly it flowed from my head.
It has barely been edited (a few typos - but mainly just layout) and is almost exactly as it was first drafted during the chaos of the first 24 hours of the competion window.
You may notice it doesn’t meet the word count limit either - being almost twice the allowed number of words. Something a tight edit would have resolved.
I hope you enjoy it.

Note I’m not entirely happy with the ending , but hopefully you get the idea behind it.
*I took this to be an Americanism for a ‘watchtower’.
